Methodology and Cost Transparency

A credible comparison must clearly distinguish: What does a car cost simply by being owned – and what does it cost through actual use?

1. Fixed costs of a car

Fixed costs arise regardless of whether the vehicle is driven daily or left unused for weeks.

  • Depreciation
  • Insurance
  • Motor-related insurance tax
  • Financing costs
  • Motorway vignette
  • Parking space or garage
  • Vehicle inspection and recurring base costs

A car costs money even when it is not being used.
A taxi only costs money when it is actually used.

2. Variable costs per kilometre

Variable costs arise from actual mileage. They increase directly with kilometres driven.

  • Fuel or electricity
  • Tyre wear
  • Maintenance and servicing
  • Repairs
  • Brakes, oil and ongoing wear

This gives the basic formula:

Monthly car costs = monthly fixed costs + (annual kilometres × variable costs per kilometre ÷ 12)

3. Vehicle categories

A comparison without vehicle category would be imprecise. Therefore, three typical categories are considered.

Compact car

Typical for young people, urban traffic and low annual mileage.

Mid-range car

Realistic average category for many households and working people.

Upper mid-range car

Typical for families, commuters and professional use.

4. Public transport plus taxi as an alternative model

The car is not compared to individual taxi rides, but to a realistic mobility model:

  • Public transport for planned journeys
  • Taxi for evening mobility
  • Taxi for medical and shopping trips
  • Taxi as a feeder to railway or bus stops
  • Taxi for safety and comfort situations
Taxi budget = monthly car costs − monthly public transport costs
Possible taxi rides = Taxi budget ÷ average taxi fare per ride

For a campaign-ready final version, all figures must be backed by current and verifiable sources.
