Patient Transport

According to the guidelines of the Austrian health insurance funds, trips without a paramedic – primarily by taxi – are referred to as patient transport (Krankenbeförderung).

This differs from emergency medical transport (Sanitäterpflicht), rescue transport (for accidents or acute illnesses), and emergency doctor transport.

Depending on the applicable service catalogue of the respective health insurance fund, doctors may prescribe such patient transport for their patients.

Taxi Rammerstorfer e.U. is a contracted partner of all Austrian health insurance funds and carries out such journeys.

How to obtain a patient transport referral for a taxi

To obtain a transport referral, the inability to walk independently is the key criterion. The absence of public transport or an unavailable companion does not give rise to a claim for a transport referral.

As a general rule:
• The assessment of the inability to walk rests with the treating physician (including in a hospital).
• The assessment is always made individually based on the patient's specific health condition. There are therefore no general diagnosis or indication lists.

In individual cases, however, additional circumstances may justify the inability to walk:
o The severity of the illness
o The presence of concurrent conditions
o The need for medical equipment
o Special requirements regarding positioning

Transport at the expense of the health insurance fund may always be prescribed:
• For immunodeficiency due to tumour treatment and the associated increased risk of illness
• For isolation-requiring infectious diseases to prevent endangering others
• For journeys by dialysis patients where the trip is related to the dialysis treatment
• For journeys by chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients where the trip is related to the respective treatment
